It’s time to Michael down your Vincents and get ready for a girls’ night in!
We all know that at some point in every sleepover it is movie time. Sometimes all you need in life is to invite your friends over for a nice little R & R, you know, a girls’ night in. It is great to stay up late and catch up about our busy lives and how great it is just to hang out. At some point in the night, it is time to put on a great movie and just create that one of a kind commentary. Here are some of my movie night recommendations for a girls’ night in (in no particular order).
Movies:
- Pride & Prejudice (2005)
The ultimate chick-flick movie. A period drama that has everything; a sassy female lead that wants nothing to do with the expectations society has given her and an awkward, handsome male lead who just does not know how to interact with the world. Lizzie and Darcy’s love story is one that will leave you sighing. That and hoping something romantic will happen to you if you wait for hours in a field at dawn. A girl can dream. It is a very cinematic film with an amazing score. One of my all-time favourite films.
- The Crow (1994)
The Crow is a tale of love and revenge. One year after he and his fiancé are murdered on Devil’s Night (October 30), Eric Draven is resurrected from the dead to take revenge on those who stole his and his beloved’s chance at happiness. Despite the circumstances, Eric remains a kind-hearted soul, but only if you aren’t on his list. A very romantic film.
- Moulin Rouge! (2001)
A stunning, beautiful, and romantic musical. The naïve poet Christian finds himself in Paris and falls in love with the beautiful courtesan Satin who works at the Moulin Rouge. Like all Baz Luhrmann films, some might find the beginning a little odd or jarring. Please stick with this film. Trust me, it has a wonderful story and characters. I dare you not to cry.
- Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
A tale of self-discovery and search for freedom. Sayuri tells her story of how she came from a poor fishing village, was sold for money, and became the most celebrated geisha in all of Japan. This film has breathtaking cinematography, accompanied by a magical score by John Williams.
- Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Despite its initial appearance, the latest in the Mad Max installments is non-other than a feminist film. We have Furiosa at the head of a group of rebellious women who have had enough of the world that men have killed. Max aids them in their quest, but never becomes the saviour character because these women are more than capable.
- A Cinderella Story (2004)
For a girls’ night in you need a classic cheesy chick-flick. Mine is A Cinderella Story. A modern-day Cinderella story staring a very young Hilary Duff. I grew up with this movie so it has a special place in my heart along within a bunch of inside jokes that won’t seem to die even all these years later.
- The Princess Bride (1987)
This film has everything: fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles… Need I say more? An all-time classic and a forever favourite.
- Tangled (2010)
Guys, I want a castle. Disney’s take on the classic tale of Rapunzel. I love Disney movies so much. As a 90s kid I still have my stack of VHSs that I still frequently watch. I decided on Tangled for this list because it is always exactly what I need. It is one of those films that warms my heart. Challenge: don’t cry when the king makes his sad face. You’ll know it when you see it.
- Warm Bodies (2013)
Who doesn’t love a zombie romance film based off of Romeo & Juliet? Despite the apocalypse, this film just makes me feel good. Sometimes things aren’t what they seem and a little love goes a long way. And the songs in this film make an excellent playlist.
- Crimson Peak (2015)
I have to put this magnificent gothic romance horror on my list. Edith is a young writer, who is warned by the ghost of her mother to beware Crimson Peak, becomes enchanted by a mysterious outsider. This is a gorgeous film; I love all the different uses of colour. Pay extra attention to the colour red.
I love The Phantom of the Opera, it is one of my favourite musicals. This particular version is a filmed stage production for the 25th anniversary. It is done spectacularly! Just watch it, it’s all I ask of you!
- Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 (2003 and 2004)
We can’t have a girls’ night without our favourite ex assassin seeking revenge. After Bill destroys her chance of leaving a life of crime behind, the Bride is determined to kill everyone who had anything to do with ruining her chance at happiness.
- Edward Scissorhands (1990)
A film that hits me in the feels with everything. After his creator dies, Edward is adopted by a nice Avon lady who comes to his castle. She introduces him to suburban life and he comes to realize that things are not as simple has he would hope.
- In Your Eyes (2014)
A deeply touching film about a man and woman who are able to see through the other’s eyes. Despite living on opposite sides of the country and very different lives, they slowly gain a connection like no other – finally having someone who understands them the way they are.
- Labyrinth (1986)
David Bowie. Those pants. Do I need to say more? This fantasy film is about becoming an independent woman and finding your inner strength. Become the babe with the power.
TV Series:
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)
“Into every generation a slayer is born: one girl in all the world, a chosen one. She alone will wield the strength and skill to fight the vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness; to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their number. She is the Slayer.” Is it even a sleepover without Buffy? No. I have very fond memories of staying up until 5 in the morning watching Buffy with my sister and friends.
- Supernatural (2005-present)
Two demon hunting brothers with an unshakable bond. Who doesn’t want to see that? I would especially recommend the early seasons for sleepovers a.k.a. “classic Supernatural”. They have more of a scary vibe, great for sleepovers. Also, Sam and Dean. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Video Games:
And when you are really up for it, Fatal Frame all night long. Fun tip: give the controller to which ever of your friends that gets scared the easiest.
That’s it for my list. What are your go-to movie night movies? Let me know in the comments below!
Love,
Lauren
